The backbone of haulage

I was delighted when John Adams asked me to take some images for their Adams Haulage Company annual calendar. I’ve seen their trucks around the North East but didn’t really know too much about the Company. John was very proud to tell me about their long established family concern which still provides the same high standard of transport service that they offered over 80 years ago when Grandad Jakey started off with a single-horsepower vehicle. Today they’re based at the back of the Metro Centre, just off the A69 Western by-pass and it was here that I photographed some of their premium fleet of vehicles.  John also provided me with some old family images and I restored these with pride.  Within the grounds of the Company site, John showed me a old detached building that had been occupied by the previous owners of the land. Ironically, it was named by them as ‘Adams Cottages’ long before the Adams family identified the site at Swallwell, so maybe it was meant to be. Sadly the building is soon to be demolished to make way for further expansion of the site. Fascinating story of a local North-East family where, despite changing times, the hardworking ethic of grandad Jakey has continued through the generations.
